Meet the Teacher: Dr. Marty Ball

Dear FBS Community:

We are pleased to report the appointment of a veteran, highly skilled teacher to our faculty. Dr. Marty Ball will teach all of the classes that Mrs. Sandifer taught last semester.

Trained in the sciences, Dr. Ball has taught in Charleston area high schools since 1999. He served students as a science instructor at Charleston County School of the Arts from 2000-2008, Charleston Charter School for Math and Science from 2008-2013, Wando High School from 2013-2017, Early College High School from 2017-2019. In the 2019-2020 school year, Dr. Ball taught engineering at Camp Road Middle School.

Dr. Ball holds an undergraduate degree in Biology from Carleton College, in Northfield, MN, and a PhD from the University of Georgia in Molecular and Population Genetics. His technology proficiency includes Programming in C, Pascal, Linux, RSX-11, Microsoft Office Suite, Scientific Notebook, and Module.

Dr. Ball has eclectic interests that strengthen his relationships with students. These avocations include woodworking, welding, fishing, and cycling (Dr. Kupersmith first contacted Dr. Ball several weeks ago while he was cycling cross-country from San Diego to the East Coast). His charitable contributions include rebuilding bicycles for low-income children. During his extensive career, Dr. Ball acquired a certificate in Forensic Genetics from the St. Petersburg Institute of Criminal Justice. CSI fans, take notice!

Ball and his wife have two adult daughters: one resides in Austin, Texas and the other in New Orleans. Dr. Ball’s wife is a librarian at James Island Charter High School.

We feel very fortunate to have enlisted Dr. Ball to teach our students in the second semester. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Marty Ball to the FBS community.
